VTCT Level 2 Nail Services


The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed nail technician. This qualification is based on the nail services National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a nail technician.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a nail technician including: the application and maintenance of nail enhancements to create a natural finish, nail art services, providing manicure and pedicure treatments, fulfilling salon reception duties, promoting additional products and services to clients and effectiveness at work.

The modules you will study are:

UB200N2 – Provide Manicure Services

You will learn how to consult with your client prior to providing manicure services, recognising contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a treatment plan. You will learn about filing, buffing, using skin and cuticle treatments, massaging techniques to the hand and lower arm and using a suitable nail finish.

UB200N3 – Provide Pedicure Services

This unit covers consulting with your client prior to providing pedicure services, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a treatment plan. You will learn about filing, applying skin and cuticle treatments, cleaning and drying the feet, removing excess hard skin, massaging the foot and lower leg and providing a suitable nail finish.

UB200N5 – Apply and Maintain Nail Enhancements to create a Natural Finish

This unit is about providing services to enhance and maintain nails on the hands and feet, to create a natural finish. It covers consulting with the client to establish their requirements and recognising any contra-indications that may affect the service. It also covers preparing and applying natural tips and clear overlays in either UV gel, liquid and powder or wrap systems and removing nails enhancements.

UB200N4 – Carry Out Nail Art Services

This unit is about creating nail art designs on the client’s hands and feet. It covers consulting with the client to establish their individual nail art design requirements and recognising any contra-indications that may affect the service. It also covers preparing, applying and finishing the design.

UG31G20 – Ensure Responsibility for Actions to Reduce Risks to Health and Safety

This unit is about providing you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be responsible for health and safety in the workplace. This unit is for everyone at work (whether paid, unpaid, full or part-time). It is about being aware of the main risks in your workplace and knowing how to identify and deal with them.

UG211G4 – Fulfil Salon Reception Duties

This unit is about the important skills of welcoming and receiving people entering the salon, handling enquiries, making appointments, dealing with client payments and generally maintaining the reception area. Dealing with people in a polite manner whilst questioning them to find out what they require forms an important part of this unit.

This unit is about taking responsibility for improving your performance at work and working well with your colleagues so as to make a positive contribution to the overall effectiveness of your salon.

UG21G18 – Promote Additional Services or Products to Clients

This unit is all about your need to keep pace with new developments and to encourage your clients to take an interest in them. Clients expect more and more services or products to be offered to meet their own growing expectations. They need to be made aware of what is available from your salon to give them a greater choice.

What could I do once I qualify?

  • Study an additional Level 3 course in a different area in beauty or progress onto an advanced Level 4 course (such as Salon Management or CETs)
  • Progress into a work based apprenticeship studying a further level 3 qualification
  • Potential self-employment as a nail technician
  • Potential employment within a salon as a Senior Therapist or Manager
  • Employment as a nail technician on a cruise liner, health spa or leisure centre

What else will I be expected to complete?

Arrange work experience at a local salon (approximately 30 hours to be completed over the whole course program). We encourage you to complete this to improve your confidence and prepare you for work in the industry.  This is not mandatory, but we do encourage you as it is very beneficial for our learners, this is proven by past learners completing work experience and gaining employment.

Duration of the course?

Approximately 3 – 6 months at one day per week (can vary)

Everyone will complete at their own pace within the time frame given

How is the course funded?

This course can be funded via the government or by private paying – please speak to a member of staff for details

Will I need to study at home?

Yes, it is very important to make sure that you are practicing your practical treatments and working on your assignments or workbooks every week to be able to pass your exams and observations.
